New book on the go – The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Help by Kathryn StockettJust started listening to The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I first heard it serialised on BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime. Set in Mississippi after the Rosa Parks civil life changing event the book depicts the relationships between a set of white women and their relationships with their black ‘Help’ and the black ‘Help’s’ view of the world.

So far I have listened to chapters one and two. I thought it was going to be a hard to listen because although this is not my personal experience I knew it would be difficult. Listening to The Help (Aibileen) talk about the death of her son was heart rendering, with his horrible and untimely death her world just disintegrated – I’m not sure how I would feel if that happened to me but I can fully sympathise with her.

Losing her son changed everything for Aibileen and even though she still works as a help she appears to be less forgiving about the white people’s attitude to her and themselves.

Aibileen has begun to introduce a few characters and has discussed the town where she lives. So far I am enjoying the book but will find out more after the next listen. It will interesting and probably challenging to hear even in a fictional depiction what was going on in one part of the world in 1962 when I was about seven.

About booksfrommybookshelf

I am a passionate reader of children's books (Primary aged) with a particular interest in picture books. I am always on the look out for children's books at are written by authors from other countries. I am also keen on technology and try to keep abreast of what is happening in a fast changing world. At present my day job is to support teachers and local authorities in the Yorkshire and Humber region (UK), which I really enjoy. Another aspect of my work is to present nationally developed work for the National Strategies. With economic cuts my job will terminate in Spring next year and I may be carrying out independent work based around high quality picture books. My other interest include my allotment, knitting and last but not least my family. My Twitter name is Orlama.
